The book ends with some notes and two good indexes, one of biblical references, the other a general index. ![]() When reminding us that ‘ The joy of the Lord is our strength’, the author does not ignore the fact that such joy is both needed and offered in times of suffering and persecution. For Sookhdeo, comfort is a robust and powerful term, not the ‘soft and fluffy’ mundane version we find today, often summed up as ‘tea and sympathy’. Comfort is explained in proper biblical terms, as a strengthening and imparting of courage. The final two chapters are on ‘ True Comfort’ and ‘The Joy of the Lord’. This might be helpful to those who still fear death or even rage against it, and, as would be expected, focuses on the death and resurrection of Jesus. The next chapter is on trusting God in uncertain times, and is followed by one on that ‘unmentionable subject’, death. The next chapter contains a section on how to banish fear, including a page of “ some ideas to help us train ourselves to trust and not to fear.” (p.31)Ĭhapter three (Coping with Anxiety) has a similar passage of “ Seven points to help us quell our anxiety” (pp.45-6) which draws on the words of Jesus. His introductory first chapter focuses on the God of peace, hope and love, with the aim of encouraging us to be overcomers and to remain steadfast. Sookhdeo comments, “Now, and at many times in the past, God’s people are experiencing great hardship and hazard, surrounded by calamitous events beyond their control, and facing a daunting future.” (p.3). Overall, it was a time of crisis with great uncertainty about the future. ![]() The King was about to be executed, the winter weather was extreme and outbreaks of plague were becoming frequent. The premise of the book is Ps 42:11, ‘ Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?’ Sookhdeo opens with a reference to 13 sermons preached on this verse by the Rev William Bridge in London in 1648, a time when England was in agony and divided by civil war. There are also several pages within the main text which contain the words of hymns or other verse forms which are uplifting or comforting. It is written in seven short chapters that are easy to read and full of helpful Scriptures. This new book from Patrick Sookhdeo, the International Director of the Barnabas Fund, is intended to help anyone who, for whatever reason, is going through a time of distress, depression or anxiety. I worry we ran full pelt back into what we did before impatient with our minds, our memories and our anxieties that they wouldn’t just snap into shape as we needed them to be in. We have Lucy Fowlkes who’s bravely tackling this other area of nuance in diagnosis as she considers from the question of difficulty in diagnosis – how can it be improved, how are we talking about mental health, are we even talking about it in the right way? Yes, he will explore the most important part of our health perhaps – our state of mind. We will have an eagle-eyed view of this from a psychiatric point of view as we welcome off his psychiatrist’s chair bounced straight onto the main stage, eminent psychiatrist Alastair Santhouse. We'll also be taking a tour around the whole idea of diagnosis. To paraphrase the old saying of the 50s ‘well at least you’ve got your mental health’ seems like something to offer thanks for (and we all know how powerful gratitude is for mental health) but we’ll be trying to take it much deeper that you will normally find in a festival – we have neuroscientist Prof Catherine Loveday and psychologist Claudia Hammond in the field to help. This is how the incident of the exploding whale came about. Its death was a tragedy of course, but the smell of rotting meat and the sheer size of the whale itself made removal a high priority for local officials that. To make matters worse, the explosion only exacerbated the overwhelming odor, and the Oregon State Highway Division was still faced with the problem of disposing of the considerable remains on the beach, even after a half ton of dynamite had been expended.įifty years later, when the city asked residents to suggest names for a new recreation area, over half voted for “Exploding Whale Memorial Park.” It would seem that despite the Highway Division’s folly, locals are just as unwilling to bury their history as workers were to bury the deceased cetacean. The whale in question in this incident was a sperm whale. ![]() A car over a quarter of a mile away was crushed under one of the pieces, and everyone present was reportedly coated in “particles of dead whale.” After a spectacular explosion, bystanders were horrified to find huge chunks of blubber hurtling towards their heads. However, on one memorable occasion, humans gave nature a helping hand. Unfortunately for the residents of Florence, the whale did not blow out to sea as planned, nor did it break into convenient bits for seagulls to carry off. The spontaneous explosion of a dead whale carcass isn’t as uncommon as you might think. Their solution? Blow the thing up with dynamite. Officials were left baffled by the predicament, unable to bury or burn the carcass. Measuring 45-feet long and weighing approximately eight tons, the decomposing whale presented a challenge for the city. In an infamous 1970 news report, journalist Paul Linnman described a stinky situation: a sperm whale had washed ashore near Florence, Oregon. ![]() These business card templates, despite having designed in a Word processor, have beautiful and modern designs as well. This was apparently confirmed by some early independent experiments, but it was incorrect. When Robinson first designed his anemometer, he asserted that the cups moved one-third of the speed of the wind, unaffected by cup size or arm length. However, in practice, other factors influence the rotational speed, including turbulence produced by the apparatus, increasing drag in opposition to the torque produced by the cups and support arms, and friction on the mount point. Theoretically, the anemometer's speed of rotation should be proportional to the wind speed because the force produced on an object is proportional to the speed of the gas or fluid flowing past it. Because of this asymmetrical force, torque is generated on the anemometer's axis, causing it to spin. 38 on the spherical side and 1.42 on the hollow side, more force is generated on the cup that presenting its hollow side to the wind. Since a hollow hemisphere has a drag coefficient of. With a four-cup anemometer, the wind always has the hollow of one cup presented to it, and is blowing on the back of the opposing cup. This type of instrument is also called a rotational anemometer. ![]() Therefore, counting the shaft's revolutions over a set time interval produced a value proportional to the average wind speed for a wide range of speeds. The air flow past the cups in any horizontal direction turned the shaft at a rate roughly proportional to the wind's speed. It consisted of four hemispherical cups on horizontal arms mounted on a vertical shaft. Velocity anemometers Cup anemometersĪ simple type of anemometer was invented in 1845 by Rev Dr John Thomas Romney Robinson of Armagh Observatory. In 1994, Andreas Pflitsch developed the sonic anemometer. ![]() In 1991, Derek Weston added the ability to measure wind direction. In 1926, Canadian meteorologist John Patterson (1872–1956) developed a three-cup anemometer, which was improved by Brevoort and Joiner in 1935. In 1846, John Thomas Romney Robinson (1792–1882) improved the design by using four hemispherical cups and mechanical wheels. (1635–1703), developed their own versions, with some mistakenly credited as its inventor. ![]() In the ensuing centuries numerous others, including Robert Hooke Alberti is said to have invented it around 1450.
